How to get started when I have no experience in Linux

Just a thought, I think Reaper can install on Mac and Linux, so it should be possible to get the ball rolling in Mac/Reaper and then the Linux/Reaper is ready and waiting. To conclude: I am no expert, some of my comments maybe incorrect, I don't care! AVlinux is impressive give it go. However some are not perfect, still have "bugs" - I think is stems from, many skins are created and updated by small if not one person whereas Mac or Win OS will have a large group of programmers doing the work. Just like the Macs where it's easy to customise the GUI, same with AVlinux. Even on my old PC I could find a GUI that looked decent with only a few oddies. So on power up, press F2, select boot drive, HD for Win and USB for AVlinux, a winner!Īlso there are many "skins" for Linux. In time I plan to dual install onto that PC HD. There are a number of ways to run AVlinux, I currently boot it from a USB stick. It seems far more sensibly controlled (as in secure) than Windows. Just some personal notes: I didn't realise Linux used a central repository of sofware/apps - so to update or get new software/apps just use the Linux tool (in AVlinux) and boom. I find the AVlinux and music-linux groups to be much better. General Linux help forums are still polluted with know all unhelpfull linux gurus, but time is moving forward. Getting to grips with Linux is a little strange at first but AVlinux (and RaspberryPi) are a great help. My conclusion is, this is the way forward. Jack is going to take me longer, but all the info is now available in plan english not geek-speak. My simple USB midi and audio interface seemed to work with minimum effort. is the DAW using the Linux "Jack" system for audio routing.įrom what I read, getting "Jack" and it's various settings right might be a wrestle, not as in loading software in Linux but just getting the right configuration settings. It has a DAW associated with that Harrison audio stuff. Have a read of the spec, I think it's Debian with a lots of non-music stuff removed and music stuff added. I downloaded the cd image, booted my PC from that and. A chap has setup a distro that is aimed at music making. recently I did a look around for some Linux I could live with and tried AVlinux.
